Doesn't surprise me. There are a lot of systems out there in which the less resolving MDA1000 would sound better to the astute listener -- mostly due to a very bright presentation or other system traits that the MDA1000 tames.

Sorry, not trying to be inflammatory. The MDA1000 is a good DAC, but on the right system, it's (IMHO) way out of it's league when compared to the W4S DAC2.

Case-in-point -- you should try listening to the MDA1000 vs the DAC2 on other hi-rez music -- Roxy Music's Avalon on SACD (I have a 24Bit 96K FLAC version that was converted from the original DSD) is out of this world and the MDA1000 sounds like mud next to the DAC2. Another good example of a really good recording in which it becomes clear the DAC2 is waaay better: Lee Ritenour's Rhythm Sessions 24Bit 96K (avail on hdtracks).

E.......Great report on a premium DAC. The McIntosh MDA1000 ruled the roost of all DAC's for years, and it is very good to hear she still stands head and shouldes above many current offerings. The W4S DAC2 has gotten favorable reviews and continues to impress many owners, but the MDA1000 is a horse of a different color and has always run in the Thoroughbreds Only races. I am happy to know the MDA1000 can still sport a blue ribbon.

Yep.... MDA1000 is just that damn good! I've tried the Wyred DAC and PS Audio DAC. Since I have the ability to create my own 24bit 96Khz from LP's "14K songs". I won't let a single song or two dictate selection of a DAC. I kept the MDA1000 for its OVERALL presentation of the music. Soooo if the MDA1000 can play 13998 out of 14000 songs.... some how I'll man up a deal with the two out fliers songs.

It's the supreme mac analog section that you were listening to. I don't care how great the dac top sampling speed is your analog section is what your listening to.

Mcintosh has long been known as a great manufacturer of preamplifiers and amplifiers -- both SS and tube. But I gotta tell ya, McIntosh is also a flat out awesome source company too. Whether its the MDA1000/MCD1000, MCD500, or the current top of the heap MCD1100; the sound is to die for.

I've never had an opportunity to directly compare the W4S DAC-2 to the very well respected MDA1000, but I can tell you I definitely love my DAC-2. It is extremely revealing, has a great soundstage and has no irritating artifacts to my ears. I have heard the MDA1000, but only in Ivan's Parkland system; and that is obviously a different ball game across the board. There is no doubt that the MDA1000 is a McIntosh statement piece, as all of the 1000 series components are. I feed my DAC-2 from McIntosh MCD7009; and I still aspire to one day own an MCD1000. Space is at a premium for me, so the MCD/MDA1000 combo would present difficulties for me. Given the sonic performance I get from the DAC-2, I think I could live with that DAC with an MCD1000 in front of it for a long time. I have not even tested the DAC-2's hi-rez capabilities but have no doubt it would be excellent.

To each is own as they say...regardless of preference it certainly is easy to see why anyone would love the legendary MDA1000. Sounds like you guys had a great time!
