Bombadil,
I found the TS KT150s required some break in on my Inspire Hot Rod before they started to smooth out a little. That's been the case with any my new TS front end tubes too. And, for whatever reason - more responsive to interconnect changes than I would have anticipated. Noticed the same with TS KT150s on some other amps I listened to recently. |

I'm uncertain how much tubes break in vs how much I attune to their sound. Last year I purchased two pair of Gold Lion KT88s. I used one pair for over 100 hours, then listened very carefully to a couple of my favorite demo songs. Then I put in the brand new pair and immediately listened to those same songs again. I couldn't detect any differences.
At other times, I think I do hear some tube break-in. Uncertain. But this is why I immediately listened closely to the KT150s. Perhaps I will perceive some difference after a while. I can say that I am immediately impressed by them. I like the KT120s too. |

Meant to mention that after running the VT150s at a moderately loud volume for 90 minutes that my PT was too hot to touch. Both of the OTs were only mildly warm.

Interesting about your power transformer being much more hot to touch with the KT150's. Speaking strictly from aesthetic reasons alone, I much prefer the looks of the KT-120's. The 150's look so much like a cone or something. Remember the movie "Coneheads" from the early 90's?
That being said, I'd be interested to hear from those who have tried both KT-120's and KT150's in their Inspire FireBottles, PSE's or Hot Rods. |

I don't have much to say about the LP -76 because I didn't have anything to compare it to at the time. However at first blush it sounds much like most of Dennis' pre amps. Given the big box of 76s that appeared recently, I will have more chances to listen to it.
As for the 45 amp sent in for upgrades, I saw it upside down on the bench, but didn't get any pix of it. Straitwire did you indicate that Dennis was doing parallel/cascaded 76's for a pre amp build? He didn't mention that to me. It would make sense, since a pair of 76's would be more or less equivalent to a 6SN7 per side. |

Hey Analog, not sure what the circuit will be, you would have to ask Dennis. |

I spoke with Dennis yesterday. He did indicate he would run with (2) 76 per side. I think cascade fashion if I understood correctly. |

I continue to like to listen to the blues through the vintage 6CA7s. The sound is a bit fuzzier and less defined. Highs a bit less detailed. Makes for a nice night clubby sound. Smooth. Running my Inspire in 1960s USA mode today. GE "Fat Boy" 6CA7s, Westinghouse 6SN7gtb, and Sylvania 5U4GB. Last edited by Bombadil; 08-13-2018 at 01:33 PM. |

Thanks for the clarification Bombadil...I've never tried the 6CA7's but do have a pair of Winged C EL34's in my stash. I've been running KT-88's in my FireBottle with a Sylvania clear top 6SN7GTA and a Mullard 5AR4 rectifier. However I'm gonna try a pair of 6L6GC output tubes next to see how they sound. I might also buy one of the Westinghouse 6SN7gtb's to try.

TAD, Tube Amp Doctor 6L6GC's are a fine tube and not expensive. |
