I have used the C1000 headphone amp, but far prefer the Grace M902.

A question, what are you guys using the phones for? I thought I needed a pair so as I posted back in April I picked up a pair of Denon AH-D7000's around the first of April. (The Sennheiser's were a no go since they are an open back design) I think I used them 3 times in the first two weeks and have never touched them since.

When do I use them: Early mornings so I don't wake up my wife- I like it loud.
Why do I use them: Stax is the best headphones/ear speakers on the market in my opinion- the sound is amazing and is very comparable to my Spendors in sound. The only thing missing is the tactile feel of sound that I would normally experience with my Spendors cranked. In my opinion, no other brand even comes close to the quality of sound produced by Stax Electrostatic Ear Speakers. Serious headphones for serious music lovers-highly recommended.

First impression: as good as a 30K pair of speakers - minus the physical bass impact.

Anyone tried the HD800s in an extended listening session? Thinking these may be my next audiophile purchase. (Please don’t send me to head-fi) I really want to know what you guys think.
I don't know why it would be shocking to have a pair of cans best the AKG-K701. I know ultimately it all comes down to opinion, but the K701 aren't that great. There is much better out there. I think the Stereophile review by Wes Phillips on the AKG-K701 a few years ago catapulted the popularity of these very ordinary headphones to a market outside of those serious about head-fi. It will be impressive if there is no frame of reference.

There should be no comparison with the AKG-K701 and HD-800. It's like comparing a hot dog to filet mignon. If you're starving, a hot dog will do. But if you want a sumptuous meal that you will savor, enjoy and be satisfied with, then the HD-800 is for you.

I own about a half dozen headphones, and I've owned pretty much all the top headphones that have been on the market outside of electrostatics. I can say that the HD-800 is my favorite. It's driven by a PS-Audio GCHA amp on the solid state side, and a Zana Deux amp for tubes.

For Dynamic headphones, these are the bees knees. A dedicated amp is a must, but who would buy this without a headphone amp?

Next to the Sennheiser HD-650 for comparison sake.

btf1980.......Welcome to Audio Aficionado.

Thanks for posting the photos. I have the Sennheiser HD600, used with a HeadAmp Class A headphone amplifier, but have been curious about the HD800. I was pleased to see the side by side photo of the two headphones for size comparison. I am looking forward to auditioning a pair of HD800. Yours are not the only positive comments I have read on the headphones. Perhaps you could give us your impressions of the HD800 as compared to the HD650. How does the sound differ, comfort, fit and finish, weight, cord quality. I much prefer to hear owners comments than published reviewers.
