So lately when I'm cleaning Smokey's litter box he'll hop right in and does his business right in front of me. Is this odd behavior?

Next time Don, while he is standing there and just seconds before he leaps in, you jump in & check his expression on his face. I bet it will look like this

In the past he would scramble if I just passed by the door. My wife says he thinks I'm his mother, LOL. What happens is right before I leave for work I clean out his litter box, 99 percent of the time it's just pee clumps. So when he jumps in he's going number two. Now if he pooped and didn't cover it I'd think it was a territorial thing but he covers it, strange.

Hi Don,
I've found cats don't like a dirty litter box and will go elsewhere if it gets bad. I've seen this behavior (the cat jumping in the box to go just after I've scooped it) from my cats at times, especially if the litter has just been changed. Not to unlike humans to prefer a clean toilet.

Well I think I keep it pretty clean and scoop it out 2-3 times a day and empty and clean it once a week. But as always I defer to those with more experience than myself. I guess it's just such a change from what he used to do, or not do

Sounds like you do a great job keeping that box clean. You do a lot better than me, however my cats go outside too so the box doesn't get to bad. Your a good Pet owner Don. Maybe it's time to get a friend for smokey.
