Faulty horizontal shifting on VP1000
I'm having an issue with my VP1000 intermittently shifting the video signal from several of my HDMI sources. The picture is shifted approximately 20% to the left or right of the screen, so that a wide black bar appears (similar to pillarboxing) on one side of the screen. The issue appears (so far) when watching my Sony PS3 and/or my AppleTV, though I also have an MVP871 and a DirecTV connected via HDMI. Curiously, it does not appear on the PS3 when watching a PlayStation game, only when watching a BluRay disc. I encountered the same issue with my previous BluRay player.
I can use the VP1000's aperture controls to shift the image back most of the way, but since the problem only appears intermittently, this means that I'm constantly having to change the settings back and forth (which is quite tedious). Sometimes I can get the issue to correct itself by toggling between sources a few times, e.g., switching back and forth between watching DirecTV and watching the AppleTV. I am inclined to believe that it is not an issue with the sources, since it's occurring with two completely different devices and I've never seen this issue when the VP1000 is bypassed. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Any ideas how to correct for it? |

Talk about reviving an old post!!
I just purchased a used vp1000 and it’s giving me the same problem, and many others. Like dots all over the movie from Apple TV or just keeps cutting in and out. Do you still have yours? We are in 2020, do you think anyone still repair these? Sorry for the late response !! 10 years later ... |

VP1000 has HDMI profile 1.1. Most modern source components moved to HDMI profile 2.0 or newer. This is a hardware revision and a firmware update won’t change the profile. Although HDMI protocol allows backwards compatibility, rise and fall rates are still much sharper. Try using 2 meters or longer HDMI cable. Also keep in mind with profile 1.1, VP1000 is limited to 1080p and LPCM audio.
I wanted really bad to somehow integrate a VP1000 into my system because it’s a McIntosh and looks super cool. I couldn’t find any scenario it would benefit any of my current video components. In most scenarios, it would degrade my video output due to its antiquated hardware. Maybe as others suggested, time to move on? |

VP1000 sleeps with the fishes... (a bit of Godfather humor)
