My last briefcase (fate willing)

I am on this kick of what I call "maximinimalism" -- own a few things, but make each one REALLY great. Ideally something that will last me for the rest of my life.

At last count, I had about a dozen briefcases, backpacks around the house. I decided to narrow it down to one fantastic briefcase and one backpack.

I wanted them to be leather, look rugged --- an BE rugged: Built to last at least 30 years.

After some online research, I decided to go with Saddleback Leather, and the thin briefcase (which is not so thin, and not so small -- my wife actually commented "Wow that's huge!" (no "that's what she said jokes please" :-)). It's about $450, but once you see how it's built it's somewhat justified.

I received it yesterday and it looks great. Weighs about 6.5lbs empty (!) and about 15 with laptop and stuff (!!). But it converts into a backpack in about 1 minute if you need to, say, run 2 miles from terminal to terminal at an airport.

I love it. I love the fact that the leather will age with me, get more malleable and acquire a few "battle scars."

If I like it after a few weeks, I might go with their backpacks.

Alberto.......Excellent choice. This leather briefcase may outlive you. I like the multi-carry options. Very masculine looking, too.

That's a beauty ... mine's beast (in a good way) :-).

I can't think of two cases I really like with completely different design and material: low-tech leather vs carbon fiber. Both great in their own way.

Mine is nothing too exotic, I've been a Tumi fan for years, and on a career-long campaign to get as light as I can. For the last couple of years I've been carrying a Tumi Alpha "Slim Solutions", which I think weighs about a pound. It holds my iPad, travel adapters, notebook, a couple of file folders, my AK100 and IEMs, and a few other essentials to get me through a couple of weeks of international travel. I expect this will also be my last bag because I only have a couple of years of full time left anyway.

ALBERTO, that's a beautiful bag and I really like their quality and it looks like you have done a lot of research on this. The thing is, I do not like messenger bags or briefcases with a flap because they are hard to put things in and out of when you are using the shoulder strap and you are walking around,

Do they have a similar bag that does not have a flap and closes on top?
