E.......Thanks again. It appears that having two separate sound systems with separate DAC's in each in two different locations makes it difficult to use a single eSilentPC without some sort of performance compromise to one system or the other. It's looks like two eSilnetPC systems would be required to get the best performance on both systems without additional peripheral equipment and adaptors.

If you wanted to utilize USB, yes, as USB has a distance limit (~15 feet to be safe). Some clients do opt for multiple eSilentPCs if they have multiple substantial systems. You'd still feed off the same NAS (as this thread's example, could feed damn near an entire township) - so you have one set of data that is redundant, open (not a closed system like an Olive/SoolooS), and ultra-accessable, and then just pluck the data from the eSilentPC on-demand.

About the only time any audio quality could be compromised, in generalities (not specific to my system), would be introducing UPnP/DLNA into the mix. That requires a lot of cogs to really work properly.

Otherwise, it performs remarkably well as a multizone handler - an install this weekend (where this NAS is destined) will be in conjunction with a Marantz Pre/Pro - HDMI for all the heavy lifting/listening/viewing, and then using the RealTek analog outputs for 2nd zone. Both can be controlled via an iPad so while someone is watching on the 102" projector in full lossless DTS HD Master Audio, you can be streaming whatever audio to Zone 2, which controls 4 other pairs of speakers throughout the home.

I have the a synology 1812 + 4 bay expansion drive. Lost all data twice due to power outage. Not sure about the 1813+ . I also have that but have not tried it on so much yet. In the meantime, I have acquired 2 QNAP 869pro & in the process of migrating all data to the QNAP

Synology interface better & virtually silent. Unfortunately, I live with Forbia of losing data because of power outage. Installed UPS with trigger to shutdown the unit in the event of power interruption but must be something wrong with configuration. When I got home, data ran away gone.

Regards,
Joe Ling

By the way I am also using WD red 3TB

4TB has become available but I read somewhere that the 4TB only rated to be used in NAS of 5 bays or less. Don't quite understand.

Joe Ling

Very nice! What would you use to back that up with, another one like it? Is there plans to back it up as it alone is not a back up.

This is why everyone needs to backup their RAID devices! I have one raid mirror the other one for my movie storage.

Since this is a fresh database, nothing yet. As it fills you can expand with expansion units, configure another array and backup to it or get a completely separate NAS and backup to it. Fairly straightforward.

Dan, E's method is sound.

In your case you would need a couple esilentpc's.

The best part for me is having all my data on a 1813+ with 4TB drives in a SHR1 configuration. No all my bays aren't full. Yes I am aware of the 4TB issues. And yes I have all my data backed up.

Speed and accessibility.
