Default Blown woofers

Well, I have learned a lot from this forum, searching for the right Wilson speaker, amp, cables. Thanks for all the great information.

I bought my Saha 1s a couple years ago. I have a new Linn LP12 with all the fixings, , Aesthetix IO signature, Audio Research Ref 1, Plinius SA250, to my Sasha 1s.

The Sashas were the first cone speakers that I found as satisfying as my old Apogee Divas, but with more punch, and ability to sound great very LOUD.

So, today, after turning on the amps, I here rustling, hissing through the right speaker. I left the room for 3 minutes, and my daughter screams out that the speakers are burning.

I run into the room, and smell melting burning speaker cones. Both right woofer speaker cones melted. The left seems OK, but no woofer sound. The right speaker is no longer connected. The left mid/tweet top half of the speaker works, not the bottom.

What could cause this. The system has worked perfect for years. I leave the Plinius SA250s on 24/7. It is perhaps 15+ years old. Perhaps it took out the woofer. But, I thought the Sasha woofer resister/fuse would protect it.

I guess I need new woofers, There is no longer a dealer near me in Vancouver/Whistler BC Canada. So depressing.

Any advice on the cause of this, and where to get new woofers, would be appreciated. How much are they?

Tom

Yes, it is a Sasha. I know, if it's not in a photo, it does not exist. Photo:

Probably DC current from the amp. Don't connect it to anything else until it is thoroughly checked out.

I would say the amp. Isn't Plinius Class A? I am so sorry to hear about this. I hope the speakers are not ruined.

So sorry to see this. Sounds like an amp issue. Good luck!

Thanks. Good to know the Sound Room is a dealer. Yes, so strange. No music was playing. Had just turned on the pre-amp, and was letting it warm up.

Plinius can be switched to pure class A, or A/B mode. I was running A/B. I guess it needs the capacitors changed, and a good servicing. I once read about that. It's probably a mid or early 1990s model. Is there anyone good for that in Vancouver BC, or nearby.

I'd rather not take the whole bass unit in. I would like to buy the drivers, and replace them myself.

Would DC current do anything to the crossover?

IIRC the crossovers in Wilson speakers are 'potted' so they cannot be serviced by the owner. At least they were in my CUB IIs. If that is correct, your alternative will be both crossovers and woofers. There are a number of quality speaker repair shops in the U.S., but not sure about Canada. You are likely stuck with factory authorized service with Wilson. Good luck with all.
