I noticed that the C2800 has 4 tubes while the C2700 has 6. Presumably this is why McIntosh recommends 6” of clearance for ventilation above the C2700 and 3” of vertical clearance above the C2800. Any downsides by the loss of two tubes? It looks like they are in the phono stage.

No downside if properly designed, which I'm sure it is. Many excellent tube phono-stages use 2 or 4 tubes.

I'll go out on a ledge and say the C2800 is sharing 12AX7 L&R tubes for MM & MC stages and the main is similar to the C2700 (1 each 12AX7 for Input & 1 each 12AT7 for output).

Regardless of what McIntosh recommends -- have to CTA's for idiots -- but those tubes don't get warm. Barely melt butter.

Bob, I believe you're right on the tubes, in the marketing materials you can make out the input/output tube screen print on the top right side of the C2800. And I can't find it now other than in a YT video, but I swear I saw a top shot of the C2800 that marked the other tubes as "Left Phono" and "Right Phono".
