Just to clarify. Roon Core still needs to run on a separate computer, e.g. MacMini, PC, NUC, or Roon Rock. Roon server is the application that runs on the NAS.

Default NAS Options

I will switch to Roon shortly - but I’m not going to get a qnap NAS so I’m hoping I can make Synology and Roon play well together.

Hey Tom - like others here, I run a Synology NAS. Pretty basic right now - 2 bays running WD Red drives. Zero issues to date over 4 years. I do plan to update soon (staying with Synology) to something that can run Roon core. Many folks do just this (on either QNAP or Synology -see the Roon forums for excellent set-up advice) and opinions vary of course, but some advantages to running Roon core on a high performance NAS.

Backups- running basic Raid 1, with three times a week back-up to an external USB drive. Two copies - one at the office and one home, which I cycle weekly or so.
A few items are on the cloud, but I don't depend on it.

You can certainly run Roon server/core on a Synology, just make sure you spec the Synology to have the right horsepower and drives for it. For starters one of your drives will need to be an SSD, Roon will not run well installed on a regular hard drive.

Synology 5 bay with WD Red as everyone has recommended. Mine has worked perfectly for almost 6 years now. I’m about to change out the drives to larger drives for greater storage.

Thanks all - glad to see that everyone is getting good performance and longevity from the WD Red and Synology combo. Looking at WD Red pricing, it looks like 10TB is a good place to start.

Just add a UPS back up of your choice.

Yes to that. A UPS to protect your data in case of power failure is highly recommended!!

I’m using the Roon Nucleus Plus and Synology DS3018XS NAS (Six 8TB WD Gold Drives) with my MSB Select II DAC. Sound quality and functionality are superb. Nary a blip in over 1.5 year’s use. What more could you ask for?
