It's diminishing returns at it's best.

IMHO the KX-R does sound a bit better than the KX-5.

Does it sound $10,000 better? A question only you and your bank account can answer.

But certainly your VX-R deserves better than the LS-27 - as good as it is, you're definitely losing sound quality through it as compared to a KX-R, KX-5 or, if you want to stay ARC, a Ref 5 SE.

BillK I am a bit confused. In your original post on 9/26, it sounds like you have not heard the KX-5, and are genuinely curious. But on 10-9 you give your opinion that the new KX-5 is not as good, with no post in-between these two saying that you had the opportunity to hear a KX-5. Do you own a KX-R? Was your listening at a dealer or in your home? Not flaming you, just trying understand as I am also considering a KX-5 for my VX-5.
Also, the LS-27 is an excellent preamp by any standard. I understand you prefer Ayre products, but others may want a taste of tubes in their sound without spending Ref5se money. The LS-27 is a fine choice.

I had a brief chance to compare a KX-5 and KX-R at a dealer, though not at home.

I mentioned it's always worth giving the KX-5 a shot, as you should audition any component you're considering in your own system before pulling the trigger.

I never said the LS-27 was a bad preamp, I simply stated the opinion that a VX-R deserves to be fed by a better pre than the LS-27.

That having been said, certainly the VX-R will reproduce every bit of audio quality the LS-27 can provide.
