So here I am now reminiscing about my Dad and his Mc amps, and just a couple of days ago I ordered my very first McIntosh... Yes, thank you for the very fond memories...
Sounds like great memories of your Dad.

Enjoyed the stories.

Unfortunately, my grandfather had gone from McIntosh A-120(?) (mono system) to a stereophonic Fisher 800B receiver before I was born.

He had been a regular subscriber to Stereo Review which I found myself reading whenever we were over at my grandparents and of course, occasionally got to enjoy my grandfather's system of refrigerator-sized ElectroVoices, Dual TT and - by this time, a Scott receiver.

When I once asked him whose equipment he thought was good, he responded McIntosh is the very best.

McIntosh? What McIntosh? The company with the pathetic little black & white ads in S/R that you barely noticed? Not Pioneer, Marantz, Sansui or the rest of 'em with the big ads? Didn't know what to think...

Later I discovered what those "Reader Service Cards" were all about. Remember those? Those postage paid cards with all the numbers that you circled for further information/product literature on which you were interested in the magazine?

So I circled the appropriate # for McIntosh and this big white catalog comes in the mail. Tearing right into it, I soon realized Grandpa was right: This was a company that was clearly unconcerned with glitz, but substance. That plus the fact McIntosh is less than an hour north of us - right up 81 which was also pretty neat.

Lots of locals, even relatives had hi fi systems - but nobody had Mc. Still, NEVER physically saw a single McIntosh in person until around 5 years ago when I finally got my own. I guess that was just as well.

I have seen pictures of Mc gear, but only five years ago, got my hands on a MA5100 and loved the design and the quality of the build. Since then, picked up a MAC4100 receiver and that became my daily driver. So now I have a C-32, C-40, C-45, MA6200, MC7270, MC252, MC2200, MC2120, MC2125 and a few more Mc pieces. Three set up are in use driving B&W , Revel and KEF Reference 201 speakers...

Okay.

I grew up in Binghamton NY, about 3 miles from McIntosh. Never knew it. Drove by it on Conklin Ave hundreds of times.

First time I learned of McIntosh was in my first year of college in Binghamton. Short story is: A classmate lost his drivers license and decided to trade his Datsun 240z for a McIntosh system. Pre, Amp, Environmental Equalizer and speakers. Dual TT. (His dad was already a fan)

In exchange for me driving him to school, he taught me about music and McIntosh and how to shoot a bow and arrow. Killed lots of brain cells in his basement listening to King Crimson, Jesse Colon Young, Yes, The Who and their ilk. What I remember are fond memories.
