Your first sentence seemed a statement to me, so my "No" is to both of the questions that followed. No Darby in 203/205 players.

Darbee was a tweak to enhance 1080p video. 4K hdr and dolbyvision exceed its capabilities from what I understand.
Thus it wasn’t implemented in the Oppo 203/205.

The Sony 1100 is your one and done player for $500.

I don’t know if anything exists that will play all the formats you want at a cheaper price.

Thumbs up Thanks for the additional information

Christian..... That's exactly why I'm asking these questions. I don't spend a lot of time keeping up with the latest and greatest in audio/video, so reading that there's actually a player out there that can handle our old audio formats (CD, SACD, DVD-A, DVD) and our "soon to be old" video formats (Blu Ray & 4K UHD Blu Ray) is a great thing.

Obviously, we already have money in our Sony UBP-X800M2, so investing in a second player that can sit in our audio rack is a pretty good alternative to buying an Oppo player. Thank you very much for that information.

The Yamaha player I linked to is functionally equivalent to the OppO 103, a few minor differences. They are about the same price, one new with warranty, one used.

Darbee is a technology that enhances video quality. With 4K and UHD here I don’t think it is as useful as it once was, but then I’ve never owned a device that had it.

On DAC’s - there are thousands of them at price points from $50 to over $50,000.

I am a unwitting DAC collector, I have several of them.
McIntosh MCD 1100
OppO UDP-205
OppO BDP-95
Benchmark DAC1
Benchmark DAC3 HGC
Topping D50
Schiit Yggdrasil

Sound wise, the OppO UDP-205 DAC is similar to the Topping D50, which sells for about $250. It’s a good entry point if you’re curious about DAC audio quality.

The Yggdrasil, while not the most expensive, (the McIntosh wins that honor) is to me at least the best sounding of the bunch.

W9TR..... Thanks for the great post! One question, though...are you saying that the Schiit Yggdrasil is the best sounding DAC in your nice lineup?

Yes - it sounds the most realistic to me.

Thank you, W9TR. I think it was the word "least" that confused me a bit.

When it comes to your list of DACs...Do all of them decode the old formats? Other than folks recommending them in this thread, I don't know much at all about how they actually function. I've seen the word "decode" thrown around a lot, but, needless to say, I have no idea about how that plays into what we want to accomplish.

By the way, your "on deck" receiver, the Mac 4300V, caught my attention, so I did a search on it...which lead me back to the AA forum boards. I just read a thread in which you wrote about restoring your older receiver. As the handle should imply, we own old Mac receivers, too. How did you get on with the project?

Default Playing SACD audio on old equipment

All the DAC’s I have decode the oldest PCM format which is the CD format; 16 bits @ 44.1 kHz sampling rate. My oldest DAC, the Benchmark DAC1, will decode up to 24 bits @ 192 kHz.

The newer ones decode DSD formats used in SACD’s, and also support USB interfaces.

So for DAC’s there are really only two formats: PCM and DSD.

But there are scores of different digital audio STORAGE formats like FLAC, ALAC, AAC, MP3, VOB, WAV, etc.

These formats are all decoded by your music player into PCM or DSD that your DAC can read and turn into an analog output.

I completed the MAC 4300 restore last winter. The unit performs flawlessly now and probably will for another 20 years.

Post Gaining a basic understanding of DACs

W9TR..... So, assuming that I'm understanding you correctly, a "universal" player -- like the Oppo UDP-203 -- has the circuitry on board to decode both the PCM and the DSD formats you mentioned...Is that correct?

By the way, I have a line on an Oppo UDP-203 that I'm told is in great shape. Given my research, the price is fair, so we're seriously considering it as the new (to us) DAC source for our Mac MX130/MC300 stereo setup.

Considering that you know a lot more about DACs, obviously, than I do, I'd appreciate any other thoughts you might have on the -203.

Have a great day
