I'm putting together a Garrard 301 front end and considering a Monbrison or Masetto pre amp to round out a system that will be powered by a pair of McIntosh MC75's. The turntable plan calls for a Chris Harban plinth, SME 312S tonearm and EMT or Denon 103 cartridge. I'd welcome thoughts on a few things:

1) Feedback from anyone who had tried a Harban plinth with a 301?

2) Whether there is any material difference between Masetto and Monbrison phono stages?

3) Looks like many of you with Shindo pre amps are using the A23 SUT's. Will I be disappointed with the internal SUT that comes with these pre amps?

4) Finally, I'm accustomed to a quality solid state phono stage with a low noise floor. Given that a tube phono stage is generally not as quiet, I'm curious what I might expect from the internal stage and the A23 with regard to noise floor?

My apologies for all of the questions in a single post :-)

I havent heard the Harban plinths, but I have read good things about them with a 301 - should be a winning combo.

The internal SUT of Shindo amps is tailored for a SPU type MC, with a very low internal resistance. You should use an external SUT like the A23 or a Bobs Cinemag 3440 with the Denon 103.

Shindo phonos have a very low noise floor. I went from a Vacuum State SS phono to the Shindo VR, and believe it or not, the Shindo is as quiet and much more musical.

Helpful feedback, thanks! Makes sense that the pre amps are optimized for the SPU / Shindo 301. I'll have a chance to audition the pre amps soon so I'll get a better feel for what they have to offer. The reviews I've read here have been off the charts.

A Shindo preamp with a pair of Mc MC75's should be a wonderful combo.

I have used McIntosh Mc75's with the Masseto and Vintage Red Tannoys they mated very well together, before I decided to upgrade to the Cortese.
Currently I am running the 301 directly in the phono stage without a SUT, but i am considering the A23 SUT with Shindo IC's as my next purchase.

Good luck with your choice between great and greater...

Chris' plinths are amazing and i wouldn't hesitate to recommend his work. Here's my 301 restore and plinth by Woodsong Audio (Chris Harban).

That's a beautiful turntable, very similar to what I have in mind! Are you using one of the arms for mono records?

Thanks for all the comments guys. I think the Shindo + Mc combination will be a good match for the equipment I mentioned and would certainly entertain a move to Shindo amps down the line. My MC75's sound great following a professional restoration process which included the replacement of all caps and resistors with audiophile grade components. I also use a full complement of vintage tubes.
