At 150 watts per channel, the MC152 is the more powerful of the two.
Not certain what is meant by "real" power. Either an amplifier meets spec or it does not. This has never been an issue with McIntosh which is well known to rate its products conservatively. |

I doubt there is any appreciable difference apart from the 3 dB extra headroom of the MC302. Otherwise, the 150 wpc should be more than adequate with a pair of loudspeakers of 90 dB sensitivity in an average room from a typical listening distance.
Realistically the MC152 capability should be closer to 200 wpc continuous given the conservative manner in which McIntosh rates its products. Short duration peak capabilities are even higher still. |

HiFi World magazine measured the MC152 at 253 wpc into 8 ohms and 225 wpc into 4 ohms.

I believe it. Mine was a monster. Tons of power on tap. Always felt bigger than its chasis would suggest. If only it had the classic knobs instead. Those damn knobs (or lack there off)...

Is this the correct question you wish answered? Perhaps you may wish to know which would pair better with your desired speakers? A tube amplifier is much better at swinging volts rather than solid state which does better at current. Of course none of this matters if there is no difference in sound. I find the MC275 VI, of which I own two for disclosure to be much more resolving in the midrange with better micro dynamics and more of a palpable presence compared to any of Mc’s SS amplifiers. That said I find the SS to be slightly more extended on treble but I still prefer the sound of the tubes. Bass is fuller on the bottom with tubes but is deeper and tighter with SS. I don’t think you will go wrong with either but they will have different characters. Neither is perfect nor is one better. That said I would expect the MC452 to be the SS equivalent of the MC275 based on sound quality rather than the 152/301 twins. Again don’t be fooled by the numbers, the most important watt is the first watt. It’s to this one you always have to listen. Best Mike S. |

Hi Mati,
On the one hand both options sound beautiful, but as people rightly pointed out here, the 152 is a powerful little thing and has more "juice" in than one would expect at first. I had one and could never go past the 47-49% mark in the volume pot. Having said that, considering your taste and your equipment you'd probably like the sound of the 275 a bit more. My recommendation: both are very good in their own way but do not let the power issue dictate what you get in the end. Abrazo Fernando
