Ok, I just finished with the 301. It's back on its shelf with disc 5 of Instrumentals Complete playing. As I begin to type the theme from Bonanza is playing, about to transition into the theme from Exodus.

First, the instructions McIntosh sent seem to be for an older build of the 301, as getting the top cover off is the same as for the C2300; two screws at the front and the two on the back of the top plate come out, then one side panel is removed. The screws weren't "nailed" in place as they were on the 2300, though.

It was a simple matter to adjust the screws on either side of the CD tray, and by eye at least the tray is now dead center in the slot. I tested it before and after placing the 301 back on its shelf. It sounds about the same as it did before. The scraping noise is gone. Now that it's back in place I'll probably play another disc or two to see if anything changes, and keep an eye on it over the next few days. I just heard a bit of distortion, like static, come from the left speaker (my computer is right next to it). Not sure what that is, unless it's in the recording and I happened to be close enough to hear it.

Anyway, the tray is working properly as of right now. The theme from The Magnificent Seven is playing.

Thanks. Thinking about it now, I'm not so sure the tray shifted in transit, though that's quite possible. It could be the tray was tightened too far when the repairs were done, too. I think definitely that I should keep an eye on the tray going forward. I did loosen the screws, after all.

But for now, all seems well. The tray sounds like its former smooth self. It appears they even cleaned behind the McIntosh logo on the front, as it looked a bit dirty behind the glass in the middle of the logo previously; I never bothered with that. It looks a bit better to me now, unless it's my imagination.

The tray issue is back, it seems. In recent times, the tray has again been slow to open when the 301 is turned on, making noises not unlike the whining of a petulant child. It closes fine and plays fine, however. Today, however, is the second time in a week it wouldn't open.

This is another twist in what is happening lately. I'd been thinking about changing CD players, and this makes me think about it a bit more. I've always been a bit bummed by the fact that the universal remote which comes with the 301 doesn't open the tray, so one must use the button on the 301's front. I don't know if how the button gets pushed has anything to do with the problem, but I'd rather handle any equipment as little as possible.

As for alternatives to the 301, there is Audio Classics, which has NOS MCD500 and used MCD550 players (of course, no "open" button on the remote). I also have the opportunity to get the Marantz SA-10 for a really good price, and I'm more tempted now. But, maybe I'll e-mail McIntosh and see what they say first.

Charles.......Perhaps Audio Classics will take your MCD301 in trade on a MCD500. They will be able to repair the MCD301 and resell it. The MCD500 sounds considerable better than the MCD301. I owned both in years past.

That's what I'd hope if I go that route. I've not compared the MCD500 and a Marantz SA-10, nor have I ever heard either; both have plenty of positive press. But absent the trade-in, the Marantz is a better deal cost-wise, as the price I could get is less than the aforementioned NOS MCD500 (I'm on good terms with the Marantz dealer, the same gentleman from whom I purchased all my Pioneer Elite gear except for the LD player). Plus, I'd have a dedicated remote!

It's official. I just got off the phone with Audio Classics. I'm trading in my 301 and getting a NOS MCD500. It should be here early next week.

I spoke with Mike at AC and learned that the MCD500 uses the same disc drive as the flagship Mac player. That was encouraging and helped me go for this over the 550. I didn't need the NOS 500 player, as an A1-graded player was available for $300 less; that would finance 2–3 nights at the hotel I'll be staying at while on vacation next month. I could change to the A1 player still if I want, but don't think I will.

I'm thinking to get the 500, set it up and make sure it works, then box up and ship off my 301. As for the problem with the 301's disc drive, AC thinks the drive belt is the likely culprit.

This now means I won't get the Marantz SA-10, since the 301 trade-in makes the 500 a better deal. I would have gotten a fantastic deal on the SA-10 from my dealer, but I'd still have to figure out what to do with the 301 after that. It also postpones, if not eliminates, a new TT any time soon next year.
