Default Incorporating Projector into 2 Channel

I just purchased a Epson 5030 projector and 120" screen. I'm two channel only. I occasionally have sound from my TV coming through my 2 channel via an optical cord from the TV to my DAC. I was told I would have to run the optical cable from my cable box to the DAC for sound when I receive the projector...is this correct or is there a better way?

I should have added I won't have the projector and screen until the 28th of June. Would the Wyred 4 sound Remedy or OPPO 105 improve the sound?

Firstly, yes it would work. S/PDIF output is stereo only even if the content is DD 5.1 or better. Most music DACs will not be able to decode a Dolby or DTS signal. Given you only have two speakers this should not be a problem. Though I am not sure how much value/improvement it would add in a down-mixed signal.

Using HDMI with a AVR or Processor set in 2.1 mode would more than likely provide better sound.

What is the rest of your system?

... depends on the DAC you are using now. I feed cable TV sound into one of the inputs on my Oppo 95. Its DACs deal with the stereo signal, not surround, and output RCA or XLR to my preamp.

What about a receiver pre amp. That would work as a hub for the tv/projector/tv-box signals. And thats where you'd hook up your Oppo to.
Any way that is how I have set up my projector/hifi combo. But as I am running 5.2 I am using a receiver with built in amps to run my center and surround speakers. But for 2 ch, you don't need that.

A projector is only a display. So what do you intend to play on it?

A Bluray player? An Apple TV? A cable box?

Most of these sources would have an optical or coax output.

You could hook these up to your current DAC - you just need to set the source devices to convert the audio to PCM 2 channel. Most video sources might encode in Dolby Digital.

My recommendation is to get a Bryston BDA-3 and use it as an HDMI switch/DAC since you are already a Bryston owner

I understand a projector is only a display. My source will be a Bluray player and cable box. My question: is there a better option than running an optical cable from my cable box to the DAC, while still maintaining high quality 2 channel? Will the OPPO 105 provide the same options as the Bryston BDA-3?
