After using a number of speaker cables (but not the $40,000 ones I was more than once coerced into trying), I made my decision several years ago to go the heavyweight, colossal, anti-exotic route, and have not looked back even once. I am using #4 AWG welding cable. 1634 strands hot / 1634 strands common, per cable. Very flexible and the most direct conduit from power amp output to speaker driver input. Nothing fancy to change or adulterate the sound. Last edited by GaryProtein; 07-01-2012 at 02:31 PM. |

Graham,
What a great update. I read your post several times to make sure I didn't miss anything. Now let's see, if I sold my wife's car I could upgrade to those 20.7's huuummmm, better not go there. ~Mike |

Mike,
thanks mate, and yes, at first appearances selling your wife's car to upgrade your speakers might seem a bit too just about you. But look deeper... it would encourage her to walk more often and put her in touch with the local community, lower her carbon footprint and also get her healthier all at the same time What greater gifts could you give her than enriched personal connections, clear social conscience and the lasting gift of good health. And yeah, no way, I wouldn't try it either... PS I did weigh up the pros and cons of staying with the beautiful 3.7s and putting in some JL subs to augment the bass a bit as you have but got an opportunity at a trade that worked out well. Funnily I also thought about chasing that next level on the 3.7s through upgrades on the amp and pre-amp but glad I didn't go that way now. The dealer who came for the set-up of the 20.7s is the Australian importer and probably has heard just about every combination of maggies and electronics you could think of. He has heard the 3.7s with well over $200k worth of Technical Brain amplification, DCS front end and a loom of reference Sensati cabling and while that set-up is mindblowingly good apparently the move to the bigger panels buys you something different again... wholeness with scale... wouldn't mind hearing the Technical Brains on the 20.7s tho Graham Last edited by audiot servant; 07-03-2012 at 07:03 PM. |

Graham,
You certainly have convinced me that the 20.7s are one of high end audios best buys if one has the room to let them shine. ~Mike |

Thanks again Graham for your comments! very much appreciated.
Considering again how happy I am with the 3.7s, I'm continually encouraged to hear that there are no "down-sides" to the 20.7s in comparison to the 3.7s. I'd been continually concerned that there would be some single aspect of the 20.7s that was not as good as the 3.7s. Other than size/weight of course. still looking like "August".... |

Hi! Just wanna let you guys know that I met Mr. Ying Tan of ORG records (http://www.originalrecordingsgroup.com/) during dinner today. He's in transit in Bangkok from Singapore on the way to LA. Found out he's using the 3.7's in his own system, driven by VTL tube amps.
I couldn't wait for my 20.7's to be installed in the new house next year. So, while the big Maggies will be left at my dealer when they arrived at the end of this month, I'm getting the new 1.7's for my town house. They will be used as rear speakers later in the new room. Cheers. Last edited by klao; 07-11-2012 at 12:12 PM. |

Klao Great, sounds like a good strategy.

Over the academic break I have been able to get plenty of hours up on the 20.7s to get them started to get settled in good and proper... probably have over 300hrs up now, and the whole time they have been always utterly musical and enjoyable even when things went a bit in and out of the zone for a while but the shocked expression is back on my face again, these speakers are silly dumb good... trying to write how good they are is getting even sillier... just amazing.
On the 3.7s I found that about the 300hrs mark signalled a start to some very real SQ gains that kept just coming and coming through for quite a few more hundred hours after that... all I can say to anyone waiting for these speakers that this is a very very sweet ride and you will not be disappointed... |
