Check the Ribbon Cable
If you have done the AC disconnect/reconnect and that has not fixed it, it might be worth checking the ribbon cable that probably is connecting the display to the supporting circuit board.
I had a similar problem with my C2200. I had the cover off for tube swapping and accidentily dropped small thing into the unit. After much consternation I discovered that little innocent whatever it was must have hit that ribbon cable on its way down and unseated it just enough to mess up the display. Not saying you're as clumsy as yours truly, but I can imagine if the ribbon cable ends are dirty or corroded or the unit has been moved around lately, it might just turn out to be an easy and cheap fix for ya. Good luck! |

This is a good piece of information. I am being slow about dealing with this due to how busy I have been........but also the unit works fine. I was scared to use it in this condition but tried it this past weekend and it sounds fine, operates fine.......can't really see what's going on and it turns on by itself the second power is applied. Appreciate the comment.

I wanted to drop a quick note and let you know that I ran into a similar display issue with a C2600 (this is about 5 years back). I had a brand new C2600 and at the time, decided to go a different route, so I sold it to a friend of mine. I had never even opened it. He took it home and was reporting the same type of problems you are reporting. I took it back, tried it at my house, and everything was fine. The problem ended up being the line conditioner he was using (it was PS Audio). I had him plug it directly into the wall, and it worked perfectly fine. Plugged it into his PS Audio (which was an older model P5 I believe) and it acted all sorts of crazy and had a garbled display.
So, maybe try plugging it into the wall directly and see if it changes anything. Or maybe even try doing the same but at a friends house just to rule out you having something going on with your home electrical. |

Thanks for the replies and info. I appreciate it. I thought I might get lucky at first playing with some of the ribbon cables, or plugging in away from all other equipment.
I got the C220 on my bench last night, cover off, nothing obvious wrong and still turning on by itself and garbled display when rotating input selector. Nothing at all connected to unit. Rest procedure does not change anything. Removing and re-seating of ribbon cables did nothing either . They were very secure. Cleaned it all up and put it into it's original double box. Getting ready to send her out.

Sorry to hear it is not a simple fix
Sorry to hear its not a simple fix. If it makes you feel any better I just took my C2200 in to the local authorized repair. No output, completely silent. Good news is: tubes light, display is fine, no smoke, visible cracked resistors or bulging caps. I would normally be able to troubleshoot and did toubleshoot the "regular" circuit. You know the one that actually exists in the real world with traces on a board. But the C2200 is a tube preamp that also has microprocessors, transistors and op amps. Over my head, very frustrating! First time I've taken a piece of audio equipment in to somebody else for repair in, lesssee .... 34 years. My ego will take a while to recover.

No.........I hadn't heard or read about that. Can you please explain more? Is this a procedure specific to a C220? The reset procedure in the C220 manual is different and it works. I can get it to do the reset. But it doesn't fix the issue. The unit is now double boxed. I was planning on sending out tomorrow morning.
