Your profile indicated that "here" meant the San Francisco area, so that is what I researched. The evidence pointed to the fact that in 2003 SF was above the national average in many crime statistics, and thus that seemed to indicate that your claim to live in one of the safest neighborhoods in the country was false. I posted the data for others to decide for themselves.

Quote:
Even then, you take one of the top 10 major metropolitan cities in the country and try to rate its crime statistics? That's like trying to separate Manhattan and calling that "The only part of NYC we'll rate, leave Queens and the Bronx out of the statistics."
1) Again, I didnt say that SF has a crime rate higher than the top 10 cities in the US, I said that according to the FBI, in 2003, SF had a crime rate that in many categories was higher than the national average. The only reason I said this at all is that you claimed that your near-SF community was one of the safest in the nation, not one of the safest among the top 10 metro areas.

2) I dont follow your analogy between leaving out Queens in rating the crime rate of NYC, and comparing SF to the rest of the nation concerning crime rate. One is skewing the data by leaving out a part from the whole, the other is taking a part and comparing it to the whole. It is not valid to leave an area of NYC out in determining the whole of NYC's crime rate, but it is certainly valid to examine the crime rate in SF, and then compare that rate to the rest of the nation. In fact, that is exactly what you did when you made the initial claim that your area is one of the safest in the country, as you took the country as a whole, and compared your area to it.

Quote:
And I'm still more than comfortable walking in the middle of the night just about anywhere in SF or Manhattan. You probably would see me driving quickly in another direction from a "sign" like that one. Don't you know gangbangers have horrible aim? Those honkey tonk NRA types can shoot the wings off a flea.
Ha! Right. The only reason I responded at all was that it seemed that your statements would categorize many of us as "honky tonk NRA types" and you feel this is a negative. Saying that all who have guns or who are anti-gun control are "honky tonk NRA types" is a genetic fallacy, where one lumps many into one category to strengthen their argument. I believed there was a insinuated "pro-gun control / anti gun rights" message, and a linking of gun owners to "idiots with idiot signs" in your initial claim of...
Quote:
Funny, we have gun control here and live in some of the safest neighborhoods in the country - and the weather is great to boot.

And no idiots with idiot signs, either. Well, we get a few - but nothing like that one or "Take your Government Hands Off My Medicare!"
I may be mistaken, and there may have been a miscommunication over the internet. I hope no offense was taken by my posts, because none was intended.

No political assertions intended Lu; simply clarifying my original message's meaning for Vesuvius. I wanted to convey that no confrontation from me was intended, but that I was simply disagreeing with him on crime rate claims and their bearing on gun-control. I will not pursue the matter further. Thanks.

And I completely agree with Uber - gun control does not mean higher or lower crime rates.

Any idiot can smuggle something in from or out to anywhere.

I believe my main problem was the owner of that sign was basically saying "go rob them because they don't agree with me." What should have been said was "don't rob anybody." Far from insightful, but certainly inciting.

Personally, I prefer the element of surprise. No warnings here.

C'mon, you can't have it both ways. The difference being, the NRA guy will only shoot you if you give him a reason. He is very unlikely to rob you or break into your house or assault you or anything else. Take away the legally owned guns and the only ones left are the ones in the hands of the criminals. They would love to have the populace unarmed. Check out the crime statistics in Australia since they disarmed the public a while back.
