For someone who is so strongly opposed to guns, our Aussie members sure spend a lot of time and effort in the "shooting sports" forum.

Dan, I don't wish to offend & criticize your patriotism & noble achievements. For now, we are doing our best to instill a culture in our society whereby such things need not concern the safety & security of our loved ones from within our own communities.

Anyways, Ivan is starting to crack it with me again for swinging another thread...

Almost sounds like a Utopian society. You guys have your own problems just like everyone else.

Keith.......We could probably keep this debate going indefinitely. There is a lot more developed world than you referenced. Plenty of these countries embrace gun ownership by their citizens, including the ones you mentioned.

The first country that comes to mind is Switzerland, where every home has a government issued rifle and/or pistol and government provided ammunition.

The UK has countries that support gun ownership, Ireland being one of the most notable. In the UK a citizen can own a firearm. Ownership of most types of firearm in the UK requires either a Shotgun Certificate (SGC) or a Firearms Certificate (FAC). Both of these are issued by local police after the applicant has met the required criteria.

Sweden does not ban guns. Ownership is regulated by the weapon law which doesn't ban any specific firearms or weapons, it merely states the requirements to own one. Everything from pepper spray to full-automatic machine guns are technically legal. Like the other Nordic countries Sweden has a high rate of gun ownership.

Germany maintains a two-tier policy to firearm ownership. A firearms ownership license allows for the purchasing of weapons by those over the age of 18 who meet various competency/trustworthiness guidelines. Convicted felons, those with a mental disability or those deemed unreliable are denied licenses. The second tier is a firearms carry permit which allows concealed or open carry in public. The permits are usually only issued to individuals with a particular need; such as persons at risk, money couriers, etc.

In France, to buy a weapon, a hunting license or a shooting sport license is necessary. There are plenty of lawfully licensed weapons in the hands of French owners.

In Italy gun usage is restricted to people 18 years old and up. The number of guns in their homes is not restricted (apart from handguns) however, an individual can not buy ammunition unless they have the Fire Arm Collector license. Citizens may only have 3 common handguns at their homes. There are 3 licenses that allow individuals to carry guns in public: Hunting license; Shooting Sports license and Concealed Carry license.

Denmark allows gun ownership with licensing, and citizens are allowed to own handguns once a license has been issued. The minimum age for gun ownership in Denmark is 18 years.

Australia's firearm laws in are enforced at a Federal and State level. Gun ownership is accessible only for those persons with 'genuine reasons' who can obtain a Permit to Acquire from local Police stations. 'Genuine Reasons' focus on primary production, licensed sport, animal control or employment requirements, and do not include personal protection. Gun ownership is low in metropolitan areas whose residents would generally not fulfill 'Genuine Reasons' requirements. None the less, Australia does permit gun ownership if requirements are met.

South Korea allows gun ownership with a license. To acquire a gun license it is necessary to prove genuine reason to possess a firearm, such as hunting, target shooting, personal protection and security. The minimum age for gun ownership in South Korea is 20 years.

Japan is one of the most restrictive countries on gun ownership. The only types of firearms which a Japanese citizen may acquire is a rifle or shotgun. Sportsmen are permitted to possess rifles or shotguns for hunting and for skeet and trap shooting, but only after submitting to a lengthy licensing procedure. Without a license, a Japanese citizen may not even hold a gun in his or her hands.

There are many other "developed" countries that allow private citizens to own firearms. These include Norway, Finland, Austria, Serbia, Israel, Canada, as well as many other countries around the world.

Dan out of respect for Ivan's request I am going to bow out of this thread. Nothing good will come out of it because gun owners are as entrenched in their positions as I am in mine. In the interest of keeping the peace on AA, I will say no more.

Before retiring I traveled often, and she would be alone for days, sometimes weeks or months depending on my projects. I wanted to make sure she was able to protect herself if the situation ever arrived. She is confident and secure handling her weapon, and I know she can hit the target. It's good to be able to think of her as a solid backup.

Frankly, I wish every law abiding citizen, male and female, carried a concealed weapon. There would be a hell of a lot less crime if criminals knew their chance of successful flight was slim no matter where they try their dirty deeds. The best use of lethal power is to spread it among everyone. There would be far less opportunity to abuse lethal power without immediate repercussion.

I'll leave you anti-gun Australian residents with this little fact to consider.

Australia:
In the year 2002–2003, over 85% of firearms used to commit murder were unregistered.[27] In 1997–1999, more than 80% of the handguns confiscated were never legally purchased or registered in Australia.[28] Knives are used up to three times as often as firearms in robberies.[29] The majority of firearm-related deaths are suicides, of which many involved the use of 'hunting rifles'.

You can take the guns from the law abiding citizens but you can't take them away from the criminals. That fact is the same world wide.

I would personally be rather legally armed and ready than not. You may disagree and that's fine with me.

It's fine to agree on the fact you disagree.

Of course, we can always settle it on the Beach...
