The thing is in many cases, Roon doesn't really know if a device is MQA compatible.

You have to manually tell Roon if the DAC is MQA compatible or not.

If you send it an MQA encoded signal, the DAC will still see the 16/44 portion and decode it as 16/44. Only an MQA enabled DAC will fully decode/unfold the rest of the encoding to 24/44 or 24/48 24/96 etc

The OPPO is MQA compatible and is recognized by Roos as such, as far as I can tell.

I'm sincerely not trying to contradict you. Just trying to get a handle on this.

I'm thinking we shouldn't be using this Bryston forum to discuss MQA general stuff?

If the mods want to move the discussions elsewhere...

But the Oppo is only MQA compatible via USB

Added MQA support via the USB DAC In for the UDP-205 players. (More info can be found in the “USB DAC Firmware” section on the UDP-205 support page.)

I’ll run some MQA through my 205 today and post pictures of both the Roon display and Oppo “black screen info display”

If Bryston decides to offer MQA, would it be as simple as a firmware upgrade or would there be a hardware requirement?

Hi

From what I understand from the engineering guys - software. But as a company I can not see us endorsing it.

Unfortunately, for both consumers & suppliers, "endorsing" MQA may be very different from implementing/using it. The folks that control the music may be making that "choice" for us.

Thank you for helping to protect both the industry as well as consumers. I, for one, detest the idea of manipulating PCM, DSD or other codec for the purpose of making a digital file smaller. Storage is not an issue, and I have yet to hear a Total composition sound better than the sound of music I imported as .aiff files from music I own. Nothing on Tidal approached the sound of my imported music played back on MPD on my Bryston BDP-3 using USB flash drive. Why would I want to manipulate an unadulterated recording? The bottom line is MQA is a monopoly over sound for short sited consumers and capitalist offering a product we don't need. Moreover, I have enough discernment to understand marketing. For me, its like a form of another damn Divx.
