I'm definitely getting good use out of Roon and the feature rich experience. DSP for headphones is a must for me, their eq profiles worked out for Audeze with Audeze is seriously great. The "focus on this" is handy, the "suggestions", all led me to discover tons more great music. I find the descriptions of artists and albums a big plus as well and there is often much interesting reading while listening to the album and further discovering artists involved which branches out from there to even more music as I start to browse around in Roon. Good stuff.

Any more updates from NUC users with Roon, etc.? Am look at this NUC to run Roon with external HD(s) and FLAC files as my primary music files and an iPad for control. Am wondering if there would be any advantage to spending another $100 for 512GB of SSD?

Ucaca Intel 5th Generation i7 Broad Well CPU NUC, 4K HTPC, Fanless Mini PC 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Intel HD6000 Graphics, 2HDMI, 2LAN, 1SPDIF, 4USB3.0, 4USB2.0, Wi-Fi, Windows 10 Pro.

Assuming that you are using the NUC solely for Roon and are not storing any files on the NUC's drive, there is no real advantage to having a 512GB SSD over a 128GB SSD.

If I remember correctly, roon uses very little disk space for the library data, and cannot use more than 8gb ram. So, no need to get more than 128gb disk and 8gb ram.

OH are you planning to run windows on this? why? use the roon rock and it will be much better. more reliable, faster, etc etc. I highly recommend this. I run it, and i've not rebooted it in months and months. it's ALWAYS THERE and always ready.

All of the NUCs am considering are pre-loaded with Windows 10 Pro.

You may want to consider finding one that is not pre-loaded, save even more money, and put the Roon OS on it. You need to be somewhat tech savvy to do it, but not rocket science I am super happy with mine. I used to run roon on mac OS and had all kinds of issues with USB syncing, OS hiccups, automatic reboots after constant automatic updates all the time, etc etc on and on. Roon OS is solid as a rock, pun intended

Am looking at the Intel NUC7i7BNH box. Will be installing 2x 4GB RAM chips, 128GB SSD & 1TB internal HD (I'm not as dumb as I look - I can do it ). Will use the iFi 15V/1.2A wall-wart for power for now (linear power supply in the future).

Next step, if I've got all this digital stuff right, will be a USB DAC. I'll likely start with something like the AudioQuest Dragonfly Red (or similar) and move up the DAC food-chain once I've got everything (hardware & software) running smoothly. Thus far, ripping with dBpoweramp has been pretty much painless. If a CD doesn't rip easily in one drive it usually does in the other.

NUC/Roon is next.

I used to run Roon core on an iMac. Never had any issues or hiccups.

I now run Roon Core on a PC running Windows 10 with no issues.

The computer power needed depends on what you want to do. For example, if you ever plan on running HQPlayer as a Roon-end point, you will need lots of power.

I went with a powerful PC and don’t regret it. I am running Roon and hqplayer. HQPlayer needs lots of power.
