I love my MC601's but I love my Burmester 911 MK3 a little more ......
I really don't know how to put into words what I'm hearing. I give a lot of credit those members (especially Serge, Dan and Jeff) who can describe what they hear when writing equipment reviews. If I had purchased the MC601's before the 911 mk3, I would be a happy camper and not go chasing windmills. But when I put the 911 back into the mix, same ancillaries just different amps, I find the music a little more open and 3D with a weightier presentation. There just seems to be a little more information or separation. To be fair I am using the 077 preamp. Is it a better match to the 911, probably. I don't know for sure if a top McIntosh preamp on the MC601's would be a fairer test. Flame suit on.

No flames here. It's all about finding what works for you.

Joe, the autoformers giveth' and the autoformers taketh'....
That the 911 sounds more open and three dimensional is no surprise. Weightier though? If that's what you hear with it by comparison to the 601s, I am very impressed. The 601s and other McIntosh autoformer amps may not be the kings of resolution, air and slam but they are no lightweights when it comes to tonal qualities and balance. The 601s didn't strike me as being lean or lightweight. Faster, more agile around transients than before, yes. If you find the Burmester to be in good synergy with your speakers, in that you don't get tired of listening and only want more, you have arrived. Last edited by PHC1; 08-18-2011 at 10:55 PM. |

Maybe what I sensing as "weightier" is a slightly more tube-like puffiness from my Nola Micro speakers on the 911 as opposed to a slightly less round bass on the 601's. I have a feeling, because my speakers were designed with tubes in the equation, they may respond to the 911 a little better. I'll have to experiment with other speakers and see if my theory holds true.

Joe...try switching speaker cables between 4 & 8 ohm taps on the MC601's with your Nola's.

They are 8 ohm speakers, but trying the 4 ohm tap never crossed my mind. I'll have to give it a shot.

Joe... Just accept the fact you need a Mac & Burm Rig; to make you feel better you're not alone.
