Bryston BDP-1 and NAS Device
In a week I will be ordering via MasterLu a Bryston BDP-1. My question is, do you think that I can attach the Synology DS411 Slim NAS device via it's USB to the BDP-1 and have it down load stored music? I know I can't use streaming which is OK. The NAS can only stream at 16 bit anyway. I do have an Apple Extream wireless router to tie in the Bryston to a network. This is my attempt to get as close as possible to the MCD1100 on a shoe string budget.
The DAC will be next. Thanks for any guidance. ~Mike |

No I am sorry the BDP-1 will not connect to your NAS. The BDP-1 is a NAS so you can transfer files to it over the network. We are looking at a cosmetically matching Bryston dedicated NAS going forward or a docking station for USB 2.5 or 3.5 drives. james |

Thank you James,
I only have about 100 CD's to convert so it will not be to difficult storing my music collection. It can only go up from here. ~Mike |

A follow on if I could. I am curious why this wouldn't work. Are you saying the BDP-1 simply mounts file systems and can't work with devices that use, say, CIFS or NFS? What if the USB port on a NAS device bypassed the NAS OS and simply offered up the file system(s) that were on the drives (I don't know of any like this, but then again, I haven't searched). Somewhat related, I assume that a USB HDD can be moved back and forth without issue between the BDP-1 and say an Apple Airport Extreme. I'm thinking of storing music on a RAID USB device, turning it into a poor-man's NAS via the Extreme, so Sonos can find and use the (CD-quality) files there. But when it's time for serious listening, I could move it to a BDP-1, play those and hi-res files thru that and the BDA-1. Or - if I am reading correctly, connecting the USB RAID to the BDP-1 effectively turns it into a NAS, so I can store files on it. Can Sonos find and work with the files stored on a USB device connected to the BDP-1? |

Hi John, When i BDP-1 is turned on it will look for any usb drives that are connected to it, it will then proceed to create a samba share. So if you leave a drive labled "MY MUSIC" connected to the bdp-1 to store all your music, the BDP-1 will host a SMB/CIFS share of the drive using the same name. |
