Sutherland Engineering Timeline
This is an interesting device from Sutherland Engineering. It is able to use a laser to determine speed accuracy of your turntable rotation, and when not performing that task it is a vibration damping record clamp. Watch the video and download the .pdf brochure here:

While flashy, cool & expensive ($900), a drop on clamp has no value & does very little to minimize or reduce record resonance.

ONe problem with it is that the weight will most likely not match that of your existing clamp so you will need to add balast to your exisiting clamp to ensure the speed remains accurate when you remove the timeline. That just sounds ugly to me. A bit like balancing tyres.

I'm not spending $900 on a record clamp, no matter what!

Jeff.......Me either. Actually, I was on their website looking at the Sutherland 20/20 phono stage preamp, and just ran across this gadget. I don't have any trouble using a strobe disc to check my turntable speed.

The guys at Clearaudio make a nice portable strobe, but what I've seen as the most accurate judge of speed is to grab a multimeter (if you don't already have one) that measures frequency and play a 1000 hz test tone...
Use your preamp's output to read frequency and just adjust your table to 1000 hz. I bought a great digital DMM from Radio Shack for $70, and that's still the most accurate speed adj. I've been able to get. The Clearaudio strobe is really cool and gets you very close, but it is about $250. |
