Default Surge - protecting your investment

I was wondering what people use for surge suppression, to protect their valuable Shindo gear from electric spikes or lightning? I’m a little reluctant to plug my stuff directly into the wall as there is a lot of lightning in my area. I know a lot of you use the Mr T – but does this provide protection or just conditioning? I have a dedicated line for my gear, and currently plug it into a Monster Power strip - certainly this is not Shindo approved, and I’m sure it degrades the sound to some extent, but it does help me sleep at night, and has actually worked once when a lot of other electrical equipment got fried form lightning. Anyone have any better suggestions?

I've been through this myself and I also have dedicated lines. I'm loathe to use any power protection as me and the guys from my audiophile group have tried just about every power protection device under the Sun and they ALL degrade the sound quality to some extent. In the end I went with a Mr T (which is only a power conditioner not a protector) and when there's a lightning storm I unplug my gear. Not a perfect solution but the best in terms of not sacrificing sound quality.

Hmmmmm...from the way the MR. T is described in every review/site.......i think its just a power conditioner...........

"Shindo Mr. T Line Conditioner

No Shindo system is complete without the Mr. T Line conditioner. It has 6 power outlets and a massive transformer that rejects unwanted RF and crud from the power grid like no other conditioner we’ve ever tried. The Mr. T will improve the sound of any system, regardless of manufacturer."

You guys are missing the boat on surge protection by not installing a whole house surge protector at your service entrance panel. Doing this clamps the surge current and over voltage BEFORE it enters your home's electrical wiring. Protect your entire home's electronics, not just a few audio components.

Dan--I did exactly what you suggested here--called my local utility and they installed the unit for around $40.00 and they charge me 5.95 per month which is a decent price. South Carolina gets its fair share of lightning---- a no brainer for me.

I also installed a whole-house surge protector when I first moved into my current home about 5 1/2 years ago. Well worth the $$ and the peace of mind, plus I still have all equipment plugged into a combination of my PP2000 and PS Audio Soloist SEs.

Man, I'm glad we don"t have the storm & power issues over here on the west coast. I can't remember the last time we had a big lightning storm or power surge.

Mike.......Florida is the lightning capital of the United States. Serious thunder storms roll through here regularly.

Dan,
I've never seen anything like that in California. I did see some pretty nasty storms when I lived in Minnesota back in the 90's.
