Talking Finally On The Streaming Bandwagon

After resisting the call of the streaming minions, I finally decided to throw in the towel and get on board... kicking and screaming the whole way.

I went out and bought the Apple Airport Express. Of course you can't just buy any old optical cable. Nope, that would be too easy. You need a mini optical to Toslink cable. Damn you Steve Jobs. After much running around I finally got what I needed.

The 'remote' app for the iPhone is really cool. One thing I wanted to do is not need my projector on to see and switch between songs. With the 'remote' app on the iPhone I was able to shut off my pj, and still have all the album art and song info at my finger tips. Very nice feature.

I've been going thru and ripping several of my CDs into WAV. I have the Airport Express connected to the DAC on my MCD500. And I have to admit, it sounds pretty damn good.

I find myself listening to CDs I haven't heard in quite sometime. The convenience itself is soooo nice.

Instead of wav use apple lossless it will give you all the meta data and be the same quality as flac which does not encode the meta data . Also aple lossless takes up less space.

Even though Apple Lossless and Flac are both lossless, they're still compressed. Wondering if there's an audible difference between them and WAV?

I find that the file format I choose has more to do with the other devices I want to play the files on. Since I have a Mac Mini with external HD and I use ipods, AIFF works best. If I wanted to try other media players, I'd have to re-rip. Same with an MS750.

What computer are you using?

I have an iMac. I find myself ripping certain songs twice. One in 320 kbps MP3 (iPhone) and the other in WAV (streaming). This can be a pain and does take up a lot of room. Right now I'm ripping some CDs using Apple Lossless.

If you are able to do quick AB comparisons you can often pick out the bit for bit from the "Lossless" . As you know a good DAC narrows that to virtually nothing.

Nope! Flac/Apple files are NOT compressed files ie MP3's. They are a type of zip file and compressed for storage only. Upon play back they are unzipped to their original size, hence lossless format. The hardware handles the converting the flac/apple into the sounds that you hear. MP3's format really do compress, that software toss out parts of the music!! In short think of flac a like zip, rar, or tar format. It's just pack luggage "samsonite", til you open and wear.
