Default Anyone know if Optical and USB are the same??

Ok, sorry for the dumb question.

Will standard optical plug into USB DAC?

To be more specific... will a Sonos zone player connect digitally to a Bel Canto USB Integrated.

Thanks in advance.

Get the current issue of Absolute sound. It has several articles about USB, USB DAC's, USB to digital convertors, etc. I think you will find it helpful.

Jim,

You are the best, thanks for the response...

I was just away for the weekend and someone had a copy of that mag...

AND, I read that article... I think I know less than I did before I read it...

Too confusing.

I just want to know if I can plug a Sonos into a Bel Canto.

Optical (aka toslink) cable does not plug into a USB port.

If you are talking the Bel Canto USB Link 24/96 the input is only USB so the answer is no. If you are talking about a different Bel Canto DAC, what is the name? If you are talking the DAC 3 the answer is yes.
Jim

USB and optical are very different. That is looks like it says S300i which is an integrated amp and I went to the website and the specs say nothing about a digital input from what I can see.

Not a pain. We all try and help each other.

I looked at the owners manual on the Bel Canto site and there is no digital input except for the USB module you see. You will not be able to hook your SonoS unit to this unless you found a digital to USB convertor. I am not sure if anyone makes that. I do not know why you would ever want to do from S/PDIF to USB as it is not up to S/PDIF levels.

USB is a completely different format than SPDIF / toslink - completely different frames and checksum / transmission control. I've seen optial in USB devices, but these are designed to run on PCs or Macs, not a integrated DAC.
