Default Equipment Protection

Hi there,

Yesterday, after a large ice storm, we experienced a brief power outage. I immediately could smell burnt electronics. I discovered that several breakers in my panels had tripped, and most of the surge protectors in the house were fried. The surge protectors were completely short circuiting the lines they were plugged into, tripping the breakers. Taking one apart, there were pieces rattling inside and large burn marks. all of the 'power bar' type surge protectors in my home were this way (10 in total), as well as my Transparent and API power conditioners servicing my audio and home theater systems.

After power was restored, it was with great trepidation that I plugged my audio and home theater gear one by one directly into the wall to check it's operation. I was relieved to discover that all equipment seems to be functioning fine. I feel very fortunate! It would seem that the surge protectors did their job.

I also have a whole house surge protection device (SquareD) installed at my main breaker panel. It seems to be adversely affected, though I wonder if it did anything at all to lessen the impact of the event.

Sorry for all of the rambling, but the net result is that I find myself needing to completely replace all of the power distribution, conditioning and protection in my home. I have heard and followed the advice (from Shunyata and others) to use whole home surge protection, but given the events yesterday I am extremely nervous about plugging anything directly into the wall, particularly my audio and home theatre equipment.

I have always been interested in the Shunyata offerings, and have read about the benefits of the technology with regards to improving power and sound quality -- but I have not seen or heard about Shunyata's ability to protect attached equipment in the event of power surges. Does anyone have any links or information?

After a similar strike a couple years ago, I re-grounded the house (not sure of the technical term for that but it involved very long rods going very deep into the ground), installed a new whole house surge protector, re ran the antennae wiring with grounds, and replaced my rgpc units with ps audio p10s. I'm not sure I get any more surge protection out of the p10s, but they really improved my sound quality.

There are many here who know lots about this, so I look forward to their responses.

Shunyata has a product called Venom Defender. It has surge protection as well as noise filtering. There will be plenty of details about it on their website. I have two of them; and they do improve sound quality a little (how much improvement there is can depend on how noisy your house power is).
I would have thought the panel surge protector would have stopped any surge from continuing into the house. That really makes me question whether I can depend on panel protection. At least the surge protection strips work as advertised.

I use "layered protection" meaning, I have whole home surge protectors at the main service panels in both of my homes.

Then I have local surge protection for each system, and every single component. Here in Florida "The Lightning Capital of the World" my home has sustained two direct hits. Enough to litterally blow roof shingles off and in to the street.

I never had a single electronic device damaged by any type of surge, or under/over voltage situation.

G8YU, thanks, I will look into the defender!

Ivan -- I like your style! I have always been a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy myself. what are your favorite devices for surge protection?

I use Shunyata, PS Audio and Bryston BIT units. They all do a terrific job, and enhance SQ as well. I also use a few Defenders in every system also.

Once you realize what you have invested in your system, this is no longer an option, but a necessity.

I'm with Ivan on layered protection. The whole house surge protector will help if the charge comes in through the breaker box, but not if it comes in elsewhere (like through the three antennae I have perched off my roof or the cable connection.
