Default EU to America Import Tax? (any insight?)

Has anyone bought used audio equipment from a store located in Europe, and had it imported to America? I'm considering doing this, but wonder what might happen for Import Taxes. What would customs do?

The store shipping would have the purchase price as the declared value.

Any experiences or insight to share? MUCH appreciated.

US customs regulations are quite arcane. Probably the first consideration is Country of Origin. Duty rates vary by country of origin, and there are very specific sets of rules defining C of O, usually defined as the country where the article was principally manufactured or the most value was added. It is not the country from which you're buying, unless it was made there. The exporter must declare this when shipping to you. As an example, if you're buying an amplifier from the UK, but it was made in China, you'll pay the duty rate for China. Also keep in mind that the importer (you) is ultimately responsible for the accuracy of C of O information and tariff classification, not the exporter. Here's a link to the U.S. Customs tariff chapter for electronics if you want to wade into th deep end. If you're looking at something of fairly significant value, your best bet might be to consult a customs broker. http://www.usitc.gov/publications/do...er/1401c85.pdf

Tony thank you for your time in this detailed response, very kind. In this case it would be a pair of Wilson Audio speakers (used) from a store in Germany shipping to Texas.

That's one super detailed Customs link...digging through makes me realize I need to contact a customs broker to be certain of how these speakers would be classified, with a US manufactured product going from Germany back to the US.

thank you

A US made product will have no duty.
