Default LP Storage Solutions

I am in need of a new shelving system for LP's (~4,000 + 3 boxes of singles). My plan to pick up a couple of the Ikea Expedits was thwarted by the fact that Ikea has decided to replace the Expedit with a new, as yet unreleased model due in June or July. What are you guys using to store your records?

Thanks,

Gregory

I'm toying with the idea of hiring a woodworker to make one of these for me.

Thanks. I know there's a guy at the local swap meet that makes bookshelves out of pine. I'll have to see if he can do this with Oak

Cheers,

Gregory

DEFINITELY use oak or other hard wood. My brother had oak record shelving made for his LP's that are twelve feet high--floor to ceiling with a rolling library type ladder.

Pine will sag unless you use it 1.5" thick and / or have vertical supports very close together.

I make my own staggered top- and bottom-slatted modules using poplar that I biscuit-join to get the right depth. The construction method can be applied to virtually any kind of wood you'd want to use. Here's how the process looks in stages:

Stacking five units high poses no stability issues (and that's on carpet here). The same applies to placing module stacks side-by-side.

Not fancy, but it's a method that gives me expansion and placement flexibility at relatively low cost.

I like your design using interleaving blocks for alignment and stability.

I would add a three to four inch pedestal for the bottom most cell to prevent record bashing by vacuum cleaners.

Are you showing maple or poplar?

Poplar. One of these days I'll get around to oil-finishing all the modules.

lpbin.com I have one of these in the oak finish and plan to get one more. I prefer this method because I find it easier to find what I'm looking for. I hate looking at just spine of the album and after awhile it literally becomes a pain in the neck.
