Default MS750 problem???

I planned on selling my MS750 to someone locally today. I have not used it in a while. I turned it on and the red light just pulsed, the fan fired up and then a click noise like a camera shutter every couple of seconds followed by a beep. I finally hooked up a television to it and it says "starting up..." then it said "connecting to server, software update" I don't even have it connected to the internet. The faceplate does not light up either. This has never happened before. CD tray won't eject, no lighting (other than the pulsing red light at the power/stanbye switch) What's going on??

Default MS750 problem???

I would venture to say the internal switching power supply has given up the ghost. These are known to have problems with capacitors and can be referburb'd pretty easily and reasonably inexpensively. Do a search on "MS300 power supply", there's an extensive thread on the topic.

Doug.......Mike is correct to point out that the switch mode power supply is the likely culprit. Let's hope it is only the power supply. When my MS750 power supply died it took the hard drive with it.

> CD Transport: Sony Part # CD-R/RW Model CRX230EE

> Hard Drive: Seagate DB35 DVR IDE Hard drive model ST3750840ACE

> Escient MX111 Power supply is the exact one used in the MS300/750.

You can have the power supply rebuilt here:

Thank you Dan. I have access to a local and very capable electronics wiz where I work. I guess step one would be to take it to work with me tomorrow and have him check the power supply? If and when he (or Ft Worth Audio) corrects that (possible) problem...do I then need to get my computer tech guys at work to do something else? (I have read about a golden disk or something) So sorry to rehash old problems guys, it's just that I spent 2.2k a couple years ago on this thing and it's all I have left to start rebuilding a Mc system again from the ground up. I never got any use out of this ms750.

Doug.......Get the power supply checked out. Rebuild it if necessary, then reinstall it to see if that solves the problem. The reason the transport won't eject is because the hard drive holds the commands for that function, so once an functioning power supply is installed, providing the hard drive hasn't been corrupted or destroyed, the transport tray should eject and the operating system should load. Step one is to get that power supply checked out.

Doug...I had 5 of these and they worked great for a few years. Then when they started going out, I learned a great deal about them. Having sent them to McIntosh and multiple other repair places including Panurgy which is where McIntosh will tell to send yours, the first thing that you need to do is have the power supply rebuilt. The capacitors used on it is what lead to Escient going out of business. Once the power supply has been rebuilt, you can test the rest. Normally, the power supply failing means crazy voltages sent to the hard drive, motherboard, and CD ROM drive. What I found that worked best was to have Ft Worth Audio rebuild the power supply, then I installed a new hard drive and reloaded the operating system. Once that was done, everything else seemed to work fine. If you don't rebuild the power supply, it will take out the rest of the components in the unit and render it into a brick. Best of luck with the music server.

I will take it to one of repair techs tomorrow. I spoke (he speaks mostly Russian so the conversation was difficult) with him today. He understands the need for the power supply to be rebuilt. Is there any info, schematics, parts source, etc that anyone here could provide me so that I can give to him to help him tomorrow? He is a great electrician and electronic repair guy from what I understand. People at work bring him things all the time.

I'm quite sure he will have access to the MS-750 service manual. Best of luck!

Default MS750 problem???

Take a look at the thread I reference above. There is a lot of info about the power supply and around post 90 there are pics of the caps. I'm sure it would be at least helpful to your electronic repair guy.

I second (or third) Ft. W. Audio as they know the ropes on this unit. Every lousy (literally so) capacitor needs to come out. I had my MS300 done and it has been rock solid ever since. Do hope you backed up your music library if you had one in there, just in case the HDD stb'd
