Don, welcome to AA!
This is a wonderful first post! I will surely try your Abravanel suggestion. Which symphony do you recommend the most to start with?

Hi Bart,
Thanks for your comments. I am most familiar with #2, 3 & 9. These are all from Vanguard's Cardinal series. The real answer to this question, I think, is to pick one that you like the music the best and compare it with other versions you have heard. You can listen to ALL of them here: https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...ravanel+mahler but the sound will not come close to vinyl on a good system. I have no experience with the CDs. Good luck, Don |

Hi Don - this is great! Thank you for your contribution to our Mahler thread. Please feel welcome to add your wealth of knowledge anytime.
I believe this is the Maurice Abravanel, Mahler 2 that you mentioned. Great cover. Fwiw, this LP is still available but stock is low at Acoustic Sounds. Another record from Abravanel and USO also available is Mahler's 8th, Symphony of a Thousand. This is also available as HDAD 24/96 24/192 (DVD Audio) Both from the Vanguard label / Classic Records P.S I'm tickled to see another vinylist who enjoys Slatkin's Titan on Telarc. |

Tim, even though I have spent lots of money at Acoustic Sounds, I am now trying to avoid buying reissues. My copies of the Abravanel discs are all original Vanguard. I haven’t heard any reissues. You can usually find them reasonably priced in NM condition at Discogs or eBay. All 9 symphonies are available on vinyl.
A year or so ago, I started looking for the original issues of many of my reissue discs. I’m not saying that reissues are bad / some are quite good; only that the originals are usually better (if they are not too pricey). Many of the TAS recommended reissues are great. FWIW, I don’t recommend Slatkin’s Titan on Telarc. I only included it because it is in the TAS listing. I find it very two dimensional and uninvolving. Sorry. I should probably comment here that my system is all analog, all tubes, and I have SET amps and horn speakers. This should be factored in when deciding if my advice applies to others. Other records on the TAS list (post #169) that I cannot recommend because I don’t have them include: Mahler: Symphony No. 3/Mehta. Decca/Super Analogue KIJC 9014 Mahler: The Mahler Project/Tilson Thomas, San Francisco Symphony. SFS Media 0040 (I have not been able to find these in vinyl (CDs are available)) Mahler: Symphony No. 1/Walter CBS/Sony 20 AC 1830 Mahler: Symphony No. 4/Klemperer. EMI ASD 2799 (I have the EMI/Testament reissue SAX 2441 which is excellent.) I have all the others and do recommend them. Don |

Thanks for your thoughts, Don.
I tend to agree about reissues vs. originals, especially since originals are almost always going to be AAA. When clean playable copies of originals are hard to find or expensive, I'm happy that a reissue gives us the chance to experience the performance - even if it is slightly less than the experience from the original. The original series from RCA Living Stereo, Mercury Living Presence and many great Deccas would likely be unobtainable in top condition. The classical music vinyl market and enthusiasm for classical music on LP would be far less today without reissues; in their absence prices for originals would be even higher than they are. But given the choice with comparable condition, I often prefer the original because they generally sound better in most sonic attributes. Happily tons of records were made in '50s - '80s and there is a viable marketplace for originals. Here's but one place to find Vanguard originals of Abravanel conducting Mahler: https://www.discogs.com/search/?q=Ab...ahler&type=all |

Mahler • 10 Symphonies
"...stunningly impressive..." Review of the recently released set from DG 483 5656 by Richard Freed on The Audio Beat. 10 CDs and 1 Blu-Ray (contains all). Rafael Kubelik and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra Vinylists do not dismay - Released in 1971 (heh) 14 LPs with booklet. DG 2720 033 This set seems perennially available often in top shape. It is a nice complement to Kubelik's set on Audite (still available) If you want a Mahler set in your library (and you should) this DG Kubelik compilation is an easy recommendation in either format. |

Some people found him too extreme, but I really like his interpretation. Video here; https://e.snmc.io/i/300/w/084a76c62f...a80866/1477870 |

Here is a new release of Mahler's Titan - what turned in to Symphony 1. Harmonia-Mundi labels it a Tone Poem in Symphonic Form.
Performed with period instruments. Mind you that's not baroque instruments but late 19th C instruments - could be very interesting for that alone. Only digital download is available. (I have not heard it.) Read notes at Presto Classical. |
