Mahler: Symphony No. 3
Going back to Mahler...
Mahler: Symphony No. 3 Michelle DeYoung (mezzo soprano), Peter Sullivan (solo trombone) & George Vosburgh (post horn) Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh & Children’s Festival Chorus of Pittsburgh, Manfred Honeck As I mentioned before, this release combines wonderful SACD sound from the Japanese Exton label with a superb performance by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra directed by Manfred Honeck (pre Reference Recordings days). Good stuff. |

Les Musiciens de Leopold
Ensemble Dulcis Melodia via Qobuz 24/44.1 Music and musicians in Saverne, at the time of Archduke Leopold, 1607-1625. Very nice project, excellent singing and playing. Most interesting evocation of that era. With a nice booklet: although I'm mostly streaming at the moment I still listen to entire albums and read about the album.

Clérambault - Cantates Françaises
A Nocte Temporis, Reinoud van Mechelen Qobuz 24/96 I enjoyed these French Cantatas very much. Beautifully sung, played with delicacy and well recorded. Clérambault was born 9 years before Bach. They bear some resemblance, but are very different at the same time. Each to be enjoyed according to your mood.

Bach, J S: Magnificat
In the mood for some choral music...
Bach, J S: Magnificat in E flat major, BWV243a Chorale Prelude BWV600 'Gott, durch deine Guete' Cantata BWV63 'Christen, aetzet diesen Tag' Gabrieli, G: Hodie Christus natus est a 10 Julia Doyle (soprano), Joanne Lunn (soprano), Clare Wilkinson (alto), Nicholas Mulroy (tenor), Matthew Brook (bass) Dunedin Consort, John Butt As usual, John Butt and his Dunedin Consort forces try to provide an interesting historical spin to well-known pieces. In this case, this is a reconstruction of Bach's first Christmas Vespers in Leipzig from 25 December 1723. Like with previous releases from the Dunedin Consort, the performance is both lean and weighty with extremely clear diction from the choir. The main pieces are complemented by organ interludes to make the listener feel like he/she is in an actual church service. The Linn recording is top-notch. |
