I can't speak to the MCD-550, but you you sure can't go wrong with the matching MCD1000 transport with the MDA1000 if you're talking redbook. It's a pair made in heaven....

This is a pretty high class problem to have. The MCD 550 has been replaced just last year in McIntosh’s lineup with new MCD 600. The MCD 550 is a modern CD/SACD player with an inbuilt USB DAC that does PCM to 24/196 via optical or USB and also DSD.

The MDA 1000 doesn’t have a USB input, and doesn’t do DSD or higher bitrate PCM and of course needs a transport.

If you are going to do Redbook exclusively I would still get the MDA 1000 and an external transport.

If you want to explore the world of SACD and downloaded or streamed Hi-Rez music then the 550/600 would be a good bet.

That's why I mentioned the MCD550 in the first place, but I didn't elaborate as eloquently.

As I mentioned the USB problem was easily solved for me via the Bryston BUC-1 USB converter, but you still have the 96k limitation. For me, that's a non-issue, but that's just me. If I want to play SACD, I have an Oppo UDP-205 which will play SACD. But honestly, I've yet to purchase a single SACD. The performance level I have with the MCD/MDA combo leaves me wanting nothing more.

As an aside, I heard some time back that Bryston discontinued the BUC-1. If true, that is a shame as it's an excellent unit.

Default Is the MDA-1000 still viable for rebook

Unfortunately the BUC-1 is discontinued.

There is the no compromise Weiss INT204...but it is very expensive...I’m looking out for a 2nd hand unit.

There is the Mutec MC-3+ Smart Clock USB...very capable, but not really discrete in the looks department.

Guys thanks for all the advice-found a MDA-1000 that I can get for around $2600- Is that a good price??- also what are your thoughts on the Rega ISIS solid state CD player- I found one that would run the same price as getting the MDA1000 and the MCD-1000- again thanks for all the advice-

I would think that would be an excellent price for what is surely an all time classic DAC. I can't speak to the Rega ISIS as I have no experience with it-it certainly looks like a nice player.
