Beatlebum,
Nice. Were you able to try both amps on the same pair of speakers, and can you take a crack at describing the difference in tonal characteristics you notice between them?

D,

Thanks! Yes I swap the amps in and out with my system. That's the only thing that changes.

Surprisingly, the amps actually sound more alike than not. The PSE amp with new production Tung Sol 7581A's has a bit more drive at the expense of some of the intimacy of the 45 amp. Both have really good bass (the PSE a touch more and deeper), excellent high end extension (the 45 amp has a bit more air) and fleshy three dimensional midrange. The 45 amp gives me a feeling of being closer to the performer, probably due to better imaging. The PSE's dynamics are startling though.

Both amps again seem to have a house sound that I really like. I'm not a warm and relaxed listener. I value treble and high end extension and realism along with great dynamics, lifelike midrange and extended deep (but not bloated) bass. Both of the amps are very revealing and seem to be perfect matches with my updated Klipsch Chorus II's.

Hope this helps!

Yes, it does. I bet the Chorus II makes for a nice match as well. Makes sense on both counts for both amps with your speakers.

As to Inspire gear, my concerns were not about it appreciating but rather rapidly depreciating. Not a big concern for me, but perhaps for others. If one has a PSE Inspire with the voltage regulators and needs it repaired in 10-15 years, what are they going to do? No schematics & a custom circuit. Could a repair shop figure one of them out?
A good tech should be able to figure it out. Vintage McIntosh is kind like a 65 Mustang. Bragging rights but not a great daily driver.

That's why I keep working on Dennis to build a PSE 45. It truly is the best of both worlds....

Agreed. Would probably sell my 45 SET and PSE to fund that.

In theory, or have you actually listened to a finished PSE 45 in person?

What would a PSE 45 produce, 3 or 4 watts?
