Hi guys!
As a result, I traded "Inspire SET and LP-3a" on Leben CS600.

Anyone every tried using 6SL7 tubes in the LP-3a preamp, instead of 6SN7's?

Yes. I prefer the sn. But give it a try. Also try the 6bx7.

Thanks for the advice. I actually use 6BX7 in the driver position, but would need to purchase a matched pair to use as the input tubes. I assume Dennis voiced the LP-3a with 6SN7 tubes, making it most neutral with these. I'm guessing using 6SL7 or 6BX7's will color the sound one way or another. It could be a good thing or no so good. Just figured I would ask here first. Thanks again.

message from Mr. Had just now - answering my question about which tubes will be supplied with the Monos, hmmm:

"I love the sound of the new Inspire Universal monos with the TungSol 6550’s. These are the tubes I will be shipping with these amps on an ongoing basis.Get ready for some serious sound in your listening room. The entire presentation is huge life size."

.

The 6SL7 has more gain. I'm not sure if matched pairs are required.

Enjoyed listening to all the different amps, including Scott's well burned in amp with the upgraded IIPS. However if I had to pick, I'd go with the new mono block PSE set up. I've heard a lot of Dennis' amps over the last decade, but the new MBs are not only "universal" in their own right, they have the extra something that comes with parallel output tubes.
I'm starting to run out of new words to describe the sound, but to me the word that fits best is BIG. The sound is just ginormous. Next time I head over, I'll bring the old stock Tung Sol 6550s that came in my Citation II for a listening session.

If I were to get a 45 amp from Dennis, I'd spend the extra $$$ and have him build me a set of 45 PSE mono blocks. Get the 45 sound with the extra dynamic range that comes from the second tube. Some may be skeptical, but I've built a 45 amp and a PSE 45 amp, and in my mind, there's no comparison.
Analog Addict,
Thx for the update. During the visit, by chance did anyone happen to mention if other tubes (like KT150s) were reviewed in the newer Universal Monos?

Yeah, I've never heard KT150s in an Inspire amp either. I do have a pair of KT120s which I've run for many hours in my Inspire and I like them very much. Some people like the KT120s better, and they are now the standard power tube in many Conrad-Johnson and ARC amps.

Note: I’ve never had the luxury to hear 6550s in any of the Inspire amps.
Limited exposure other than KT150s in my Inspire Hot Rod Stereo amp.[/QUOTE]

The Russian TS 6550's are a fine tube IMHO. They will need some hours to open up.
