I love the size/chunkiness of the 8000. I hope they launch a bigger integrated with the same features.

Agreed, and probably still the way I would go. This does appear to be a nice unit from Mc though, gotta give them credit.

Gotta think that the next preamps will also have replaceable "digital audio modules", which will be a good move.
Been thinking of upgrading my C50...let's see what the next preamps look like. |

The modular DAC is cool. I made that suggestion for McIntosh preamps years ago. Now the real question is will McIntosh actually support the modular concept and offer plug and play DAC upgrades for these components in the future. It's anyone's guess. Quite a few audio manufacturers offer modular upgrades but very few actually follow through on their promises. Only time will tell how this approach by McIntosh will play out. If I were a gambler, I'd probably hedge my bet.

No kidding
It would also mean a need for a firmware upgrade etc. and we know how good they are at that.

It is a great idea but is it practical? Do those replaceable boards have compatible buses? Is the power supply robust enough? Does a higher quality board really give you the same as a brand new unit/DAC? Looking at the D1100, can the DAC part on a top flight unit be easily replaced with the small module seen in the new MA8900? I would like to believe it is true but I suspect it is more complicated than that. |

I hope they use this replaceable unit in more of their integrated amps and come out with a version without the built in EQ, to pair it with a MEN220!

has any brand with modular designs ever come out with updated modules?

The Meridian 808 and 818 have been seen several DAC upgrades.
