Default Amplifier for B&W

I really like the Ayre AX-5 Twenty integrated if you need both a pre and power amp. It is really small and light and runs cool. It is worth auditioning at least.

I've owned various B&W's over the last 17 years. Invest in a lot of good, clean power to hear what they are capable of. Ignore efficiency.

Nice!

Does it play well with pop? speed and bass tightness wise?

I find my prologue 2 powering 805s struggles with complex music. Great for vocals, instruments.

With my current configuration, I'd like more bass for pop music, R&B and EDM to be honest. Its not quite round enough on the bottom end or loud enough for me. I'm looking into buying a subwoofer that would best match the 804s in speed, articulation and tightness. I don't like lagging, splatting bass.

For other genres of music, jazz, classical (piano, strings, etc), easy listening, alternative, I find the 804s to be good enough for me. Like you said, great vocals and instruments.

I may try the 4ohm taps on the PL to see if it increases the bass a little bit. I may also try KT88s and KT120s when I have more time to do so.

Can you elaborate on how the prologue 2s powering the 805s struggles? I'm curious with what you're experiencing with that combination.

I have heard that the RELs pairs well with the BWs.
That's what I am concerned about too. I won't want to upgrade to something and have to add a sub. Best to avoid if possible.
I have tried the 4 ohm taps before and the clarity and sound isn't as nice.
Best to upgrade the tubes to most powerful ones. That's what I would do if I bought the HP. Always good to have the headroom.

Sometimes I listen to pop, rock, R&B and the like; basically fast, loud, bassy, complex music. CDs played from the Ayre. The sound, especially at louder volumes, can become noisy from the distortion. It doesn't sound as clean and separated as solid state. I wonder if 40wpc is still lacking. I don't think I will change this setup as it is in a small room. When I listen to these genres of music, I move out to the main living room where my floorstanders are.

Missing the yellow kevlar in the new series..so probably will keep this one for quite a while more.

I used to have Pass Labs X260.5 few years ago, then I switched to Jeff Rowland 725 and Corus combo.

I never look back, very happy with that combo for my 802D. I am wondering why there is no Jeff Rowland on manufacture forums? May be not enough JR owners here

I have just found this from JR facebook page. It seems JR is using BW as their QA test. Unfortunately not written on English.
