Good fit for your JOB power amp, many preamps have too much gain for the JOB, but the innovative "sliding" passive buffer to active gain stage in the STP is just the job

Yes from what I have heard they are a good match. They seem to work nicely together. Got many more hours of breaking in to do. The pre-amp has a tad bright edge, which W4S mentions in their manual and expect it to smooth out nicely after about 100+ hours. They recommend a full 200 hours before the pre-amp settles in.
I already had some Rothwell Attenuators on order so I will probably try them out when they arrive. I find that the volume still goes up rather quickly. At about 12-15 it starts getting loud. At 18-20 it is louder than I will ever listen. The volume goes up to 80. I think the Rothwell may help. I order them from England when I was using the Mc because they are suppose to be excellent, far better than other ones out there. |

Doesn't the STPSE use a different volume control system - a bit like Ayre's where they don't use a potentiometer so the input impedance remains the same across the volume range. So even at low levels, the background noise is very low.

They definitely use a different system. Very quite, but because the Job amp has very high gain many pre-amps have much less control at low volumes. Not a big issue, but would be nice to have finer control at low volumes. The Rothwells are supposed to work very well at this.

I have definitely noticed the pre-amp starting to smooth out a bit. I would say only about 30+ hour in, so still a long way to go...

Randy, mine needed the 200 hours to fully break in, but 100 hours was at 85% there. It is a great preamp that hits way above its weight.

I would say approaching 100 hours. The STP-SE is really opening up and smoothing out. Absolutely amazing actually..... the overly bright has smoothed out pretty much completely and the harshness has completely smoothed out. That amazing sound stage has done nothing but get better. This is probably the best sounding pre-amp I have ever heard.
