Totally agree. The ply top is under the speaker. Stained you would only see slight striping of Baltic Birch. Could do solid wood too up to you. I just did 15" legs from a nice private wood supplier called Austin Hardwoods.
You can also buy hairpin legs for furniture that you could just screw in:
