Class A watts and Class AB watt amp perform differently with speakers, as does solid state and tube amps. I don't believe solid state watts are the same as tube watts, so not as concerned with tons of solid state power. I'm also as interested in the what many looks for in terms of speaker performance - tight, fast bass, extension, etc... I'm ok with sacrificing some of that for the tube sound that I favor far more than solid state.
I don't like the Audio Research sound, and I think McIntosh is ok but paying more for the brand than actually sound quality. I feel it is a bit overpriced with the competition. It certainly looks great though and has good resale value.
