The French government paid for my Great Grandmother to visit her husbands grave I think for quite a few years after the war. The C in C, general Haig, who endlessly sent them 'over the top' is deeply hated in common memory. It was only the blighty tank that broke the deadlock. Which hadn't been invented at the time of this film.
