Serge.......Getting back to the original topic, the civilian AR15 is just a semiautomatic rifle. There are plenty of other semiautomatic magazine fed rifles that can deliver equally devastating and rapid firepower like the AR15 but haven't been demonized as "assault rifles" because they are not patterned after the military M16 and M4 full-auto military rifles. To me, all rifles are assault rifles when they are pointed at another human being. The very nature of pointing a deadly weapon at someone else makes it an assault weapon whether its a rifle or a handgun.
As for sporting and personal defense in the home, I think the AR15 is effective for both situations. Shooting the AR15 at the range is fun. There are lots of folks at the range with AR15's. As a personal self defense weapon all one has to do is look at the police force when they need firepower. They are not breaking out single shot lever action .22 rifles when things get dangerous. The extra fire power a 30 round magazine provides can be essential to survival. I like the AR15 platform. It is a solid and reliable semiautomatic rifle, easy to shoot, and lethal.
