I had the exact same problem with the remote that came with my MX120 (purchased used about a year and a half ago). I've come to learn that this is not all that uncommon with a certain vintage of McIntosh remotes. I ended up cleaning the goo off with isopropyl alcohol. It took a little work. When I first got done, the alcohol seemed to leave a white haze on the remote, which scared me a bit....I figured I ruined it then. However, this haze disappeared after a few days, and it's been fine ever since. Like you, I was puzzled as to why they would use a material that would do this. Maybe they just didn't know....?
