You are correct that the manual leaves a bit to be desired. I suspect the Bypass is perhaps for home theater application and when selected the AI-2000 bypasses the preamplifier, the output goes to unity gain so that a surround processor front left and right output can be routed to the Bypass input on the AI-2000. That's my guess. About the phono, it has been my experience that a phono input that isn't specifically detailed as an MC or MM is usually a moving magnet phono input. Again, just another guess since the specifications don't offer any information about the phono input sensitivity.
