The DB-9 was used as a serial port on earlier PCs for peripherals, eg as an early mouse port or for a serial printer. Several connectors for these purposes have come and gone to where nowadays that interface is USB. It may also be called a DE-9, but asfain they're the same.
I know what rs 232 is, but you really lost me with the "ref 5 runs on Windows" comment. No freaking way, man.
