I just spent the last couple hours with the Wyred 4 Sound Remedy and the McIntosh MR88. The way I normally have the MR88 connected to the studio system is with balanced Wireworld Silver Eclipse interconnects to the analog inputs on the C1000C/P preamp. Disconnecting the Sonos Connect from the Esoteric K-03 DAC, I connected the digital output of the MR88 to the K-03 DAC. It has been quit awhile since I compared the analog output versus digital output on the MR88 tuner. Switching back and forth between analog and digital I now believe I prefer the sound of the digital output. The analog output sounds softer without the same level of resolution the digital output delivers. The Achilles heel for me is the one coaxial and one optical input into the K-03 DAC, nearsightedness on Esoteric's part in my opinion. So in the end I will go back to the analog inputs out of necessity unless I can find a device that allows switching of several Toslink fiber optic digital inputs to a single Toslink digital output.
I inserted the Wyred 4 Sound Remedy reclocker in the digital signal path between the MR88 and the K-03 and quickly discovered an improvement in resolution. Just like with the Sonos Connect, the MR88 sound became cleaner, more detailed, and slightly less compressed. I made the comparison between all three variations, analog, digital, and digital with Remedy. There is no doubt the digital connection with the Remedy offers the best sound.
I was also surprised to discover that the digital output of the McIntosh MR88 is 48 kHz. Of course when the Remedy was in the digital signal path the K-03 DAC displayed 96 kHz.
So, there it is folks. The Wyred 4 Sound Remedy boosts the performance level of the McIntosh MR88 digital output to a level above its standard digital output. Furthermore, the standard digital output of the MR88 sounds better through the K-03 DAC than the analog output straight to the C1000C/P preamplifier.
I need to research Toslink fiber optic digital switches of sufficient quality to meet my standards. I need more digital inputs into the K-03 DAC. If I can figure out how to do that I will use the Remedy with my Sonos Connect and my McIntosh MR88 tuner by switching fiber optic inputs into the Remedy reclocker. I like what I am hearing.
