You could hear a noticable difference? I have tried mine all three ways and I couldn't hear any difference. I run my Ref 5se and Ref Phono 2se with the tops off though for better ventilation. They are suppose to also sound better with the display turned off. Again I can't hear any difference. But if ARC thinks that the Ref preamps sound better without the display, I am not sure why they put a display? It certainly wasn't for aesthetics reasons.
I did hear a difference when I changed the black tube dampers to Herbie's tube dampers.
